The new School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering puts the departments of mechanical engineering and automotive engineering under one umbrella, better positioning Clemson University for research, innovation, and education in a number of areas, including energy and sustainable mobility, autonomous systems, future materials and manufacturing, and human-technology integration. Combining Clemson’s preeminence in the automotive sector with the breadth provided by mechanical engineering creates a once-in-a-generation opportunity for growth of both the undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as the research enterprise. The BS in ME program is already the largest in the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Science. Furthermore, the nation's first undergraduate degree program in automotive engineering will meet the rapidly changing needs of an industry that is transforming itself at an unprecedented pace as a fast-growing number of vehicles become electric and autonomous. Pooling of resources on the main campus in Clemson and the award-winning Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) in Greenville, will elevate the graduate student experience in both mechanical engineering and automotive engineering, and strengthen the foundation for collaborations and trans-disciplinary research. The School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering embodies Clemson’s vision for elevating student experience, ascension of research, and meeting evolving societal needs, statewide and beyond

University of Nevada, Reno

The engineering program at the University of Nevada, Reno was established in 1889 as the School of Mechanic Arts and Mining, before becoming the College of Engineering in 1905. Since that time, the College has enjoyed continuous growth in undergraduate and graduate programs as well as steady increases in research and outreach activities. Today, the college serves about 3,000 students and offers about 40 engineering degrees, minors and certificate programs, including an aerospace minor and the nation’s first Batteries and Energy Storage Technologies minor. In addition to providing a top-notch education, the College is committed to research: in FY22, the College garnered $19 million in research awards and projects $29 million for FY23. Those commitments to excellence in academia helped the University of Nevada, Reno in 2018 attain R1 “very high research activity” status in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The College is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as 121 in the nation for Best Graduate Schools for 2023-24. For more information, visit unr.edu/engineering. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of five departments in the College of Engineering. The department currently offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Aerospace Engineering. It is ABET accredited and has approximately 800 undergraduate and 40 graduate students. The ME Department has initiated an Aerospace Engineering Program with major and graduate programs starting in 2022. Reno is one of ten participants nationwide in the FAA’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Pilot Program.
